It also prevents the decline inenergy expenditure during weightloss. The trial, which was published inThe Lancet, showed that almost allpatients who persist with its manage-ment scheme achieved a 5 per centweight loss with sibutramine. Pregnant women who drink five cupsof strong coffee daily more than dou-ble their risk of spontaneous abortion. Women who drink at least onestrong cup daily are more likely tohave a spontaneous abortion thanthose who drink less coffee, accordingto a study in the New England Journalof Medicine. Smokers have a 50 percent higher risk than non-smokers, butcaffeine does not affect the abortionrate among smokers. Midwives helped with the the studywhich compared 562 women whohad suffered a spontaneous abortionat 6-12 weeks of gestation with 953women without an abortion whowere matched to their week of gesta-tion. Questionnaires took account ofcoffee, tea, cocoa, soft drinks and caf-feine-containing medication. Mean intake of caffeine during preg-nancy was similar in both groups. There were no significant differencesbetween the groups in terms of educa-tion, body mass index, shift work orthe use of vitamin supplements. Researchers suggest reducing caffeineintake in pregnancy may be prudent. IN
